University Dance Company employing variety of musical styles for fall concerts

There's something old and something new on the program of the University Dance Company's fall concerts.

Featured will be a contemporary ballet by guest artist and former Joffrey principal Carl Corry, and two major revivals by Muriel Cohan and Patrick Suzeau, both associate professors of dance.

Also on the bill are new works by resident faculty: an unconventional take on Baroque music by Willie Lenoir, instructor of dance; a Spanish-influenced ballet by Jerel Hilding, associate professor and director of dance; and an earthy, contemporary work by Muriel Cohan.

Before Charlotte Manis took her 15-year-old daughter to her first formal ball, they scoured local dress shops and staked out trendy hair salons to prepare her for what they expected to be a night to remember.

On the big night, they walked into the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., only to be greeted by strobe lights and a DJ shouting "shake what your mama gave ya."

Her daughter, Hannah Strickland, who has always been home-schooled, was disappointed by the blaring hip-hop music and writhing bodies.

Nothing says "I told you so" quite like a lap dance.

For months leading up to the opening of Golddiggers, neighborhood activists fought the business, predicting male customers would be offered more than food and drink at the "gentlemen's club" near Bannister Mall.

But in September, after a lengthy court fight in which owners touted it as a respectable restaurant and bar, Golddiggers got the permits it needed and opened.

And today, it is closed. Tomorrow, too.
